Exposibram 2025 – Vice President of Brazil Iron highlights Bahia’s potential for sustainable mining.

Brazil Iron presented, on Monday (28), during Exposibram 2025, details about the Ferro Verde Project, which is being developed in the municipality of Piatã (BA). The company’s Vice President of Institutional Relations, Emerson Souza, highlighted that the venture is expected to place Bahia at the center of the transition toward low-carbon mining and steelmaking in Brazil.

According to Souza, Ferro Verde will be produced through a three-stage beneficiation process, starting in Piatã and concluding in the port region. The input, technically known as HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron), is considered essential for producing so-called green steel, as it enables the replacement of coal furnaces with electric ones powered by clean and renewable energy.

“This project itself is already a major decarbonization initiative that, on its own, makes a significant contribution to the environment. We are bringing to Bahia the most advanced practices in sustainable mining,” said Souza.

The executive emphasized that Brazil Iron has established a partnership with the German company RWE, a global leader in sustainable mining solutions. Among the technologies to be implemented, he highlighted the use of conveyor belts instead of trucks, which reduces the emission of polluting gases while harnessing energy generated by the movement of the belts themselves.

Souza also stressed the importance of training local labor in response to the rapid growth of the mining sector in Bahia — currently active in 48% of the state’s municipalities and the only Brazilian state producing vanadium and chromium.

“Bahia is at a key moment to strengthen its development through mining. Together with the State Government, we want to create training opportunities so that the local population can directly take part in this progress,” concluded the vice president.
