Brazil Iron presented on Monday (28), during Exposibram 2025, details about the Green Iron Project, which is being developed in the municipality of Piatã, Bahia. The company’s Vice President of Institutional Relations, Emerson Souza, emphasized that the project is expected to position Bahia at the center of the transition toward low-carbon mining and steelmaking in Brazil.

According to Souza, Green Iron will be produced through a three-stage beneficiation process that begins in Piatã and concludes in the port region. The input, technically known as HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron), is considered essential for producing so-called green steel, as it enables the replacement of coal-fired furnaces with electric ones powered by clean and renewable energy sources.

“This project itself is a major decarbonization initiative, which on its own brings a significant contribution to the environment. We are bringing to Bahia the most advanced technologies in sustainable mining,” said Souza.

The executive highlighted that Brazil Iron has established a partnership with the German company RWE, a global benchmark in sustainable mining solutions. Among the adopted technologies, he pointed out the use of conveyor belts instead of trucks, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and harnessing the energy generated by the belt’s own movement.

Souza also stressed the importance of training the local workforce in light of the growing mining sector in Bahia — currently present in 48% of the state’s municipalities and the only Brazilian state producing vanadium and chromium.

“Bahia is experiencing a pivotal moment to boost its development through mining. Together with the State Government, we want to create training opportunities so that the local population can take an active part in this progress,” concluded the vice president.
